LAUNE x ceramicsalyssa
Meet Alyssa! Alyssa is a small-batch ceramics artist based in Northampton, MA. Originally from Upstate NY, she’s inspired by the sentimentality and silliness of life and creates functional and decorative pieces to adorn all the little parts of your day. Get to know Alyssa more in the below!
1. Tell me about your work. What does the process from start to finish look like?
I hand-paint on all of my work. Once I’ve thrown and trimmed a piece, I’ll carefully walk it from the studio to my apartment where I paint everyting. This is my favorite part. I’ll paint while listening to a podcast or some music. Usually Lana. I have fun with it! Then I make another verryyyy careful trip back to the studio with a box of very fragile greenware (clay that hasn’t been through a kiln yet). The last two steps are more methodical: the pieces get bisque-fired, glazed, and then fired again.
2. What inspires you?
I’m mostly inspired by the landscapes of my childhood and sentimentality. Also the glamor of my grandmother. She made 1960’s domesticity chic and fabulous. Regardless of circumstance, something like a costume ring or a fun serving dish can make an ordinary occasion a lot more fun!
3. What is the LAUNE (mood) of your work?
Cheerful, lighthearted, and playful.
4. What are your favorite pieces to make? What has been your favorite piece(s) to date and why?
I have two answers. My favorite pieces to throw are serving bowls. My favorite pieces to design and paint are clocks. The bow clock has been my favorite piece yet. I received some commission orders for similar clocks with personalized motifs and I’ve been having a lot of fun with that.
5. What’s next for ceramicsalyssa?
I’m excited to partner with other artists, retailers, and galleries. I’ve been spending time making connections and planning fun stuff for 2024. On a personal note, I would LOVE to create tiles for the backsplash in my bathroom.
