LAUNE x Deus Living

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s time to deck the halls and trim the tree. Enter Deus Living. Founded on preserving classic Christmas nostalgia, the Danish brand draws inspiration from vintage pieces to create magical designs. Just in time for Christmas, learn more about this elegant and cozy brand below!

1. Tell me about Deus Living. How was it created? Where does the name come from?

Deus Living is a family-driven business based in the heart of Copenhagen. Christmas has always been a monumental part of our lives, filled with cherished traditions. Our Christmas trees were always so large that cutting off more than a meter each year became its own tradition—something we still smile about!

With a background in antiques dealing through our other business, Selected Design & Antiques – www.selected-design-antiques.com we naturally began collecting antique Christmas ornaments—not for sale, but simply for the love of it. Over time, our collection grew, and today we believe it might be one of the largest collections of antique Christmas ornaments in Europe.

However, as we looked around at the modern market, we noticed that many Christmas ornaments were overly contemporary, mass-produced, and lacking the charm and magic of antique designs. We realized that these timeless ornaments held something special—something others just didn’t have. Inspired by our collection, we began recreating these beautiful ornaments so the magic of past Christmases could be shared with a larger audience.

As for our name, Deus—meaning "God"—it reflects our belief that this is a truly divine way of living.

2. What is the LAUNE (mood) of Deus Living?

It is a beautiful combination of past magic designed for modern settings. If you take a look at our zinc Christmas trees, for example, you’ll notice that they are purposely crafted with a sleek, modern aesthetic. We love the contrast and harmony that this creates—the blending of antique charm with contemporary design. This combination isn’t just about style; it’s about amplifying the experience of our ornaments.

When you place our antique-inspired decorations on a modern tree, it creates a visual dialogue between the old and the new, enhancing the timeless beauty and storytelling embedded in each piece. It allows the magic of Christmas past to shine even brighter in today’s settings, reminding us that traditions can evolve while still honoring their origins. In many ways, it’s the perfect reflection of what we strive to create at Deus Living: a celebration of nostalgia that feels right at home in the modern world, where antique craftsmanship meets contemporary living to evoke something truly special.

3. What inspires you?

We are driven by a mission to bring the magic of past Christmases into contemporary homes. In a world where mass production has shaped what Christmas should look like, we feel that much of the charm, individuality, and craftsmanship has been lost. The market has been flooded with overly generic and, quite frankly, uninspired pieces that lack the warmth and magic that makes the season so special.

We believe Christmas deserves to be personal, beautiful, and steeped in tradition. Our goal is to offer ornaments that tell a story—pieces that capture the artistry and nostalgia of a time when holiday decorations were crafted with care and meaning. By recreating the magic of antique Christmas ornaments, we invite people to rediscover a sense of wonder and bring timeless beauty back to their homes in a way that feels both unique and authentic.

4. What does the design process look like?

Our process begins with a deep dive into our private antique collection, where we focus solely on aesthetics—carefully considering which ornaments would be the most fun, meaningful, and important to recreate. It feels almost like an urgency, a calling to share these treasures with the world, especially since they are so far removed from what customers typically find in today’s market.

Once we’ve chosen the designs, we turn our attention to production. Staying true to the originals is absolutely essential for us. That’s why we insist on using traditional techniques—methods that many modern producers would dismiss as too costly or time-consuming. From old-world technologies to delicate glassblowing techniques, we do everything we can to honor the craftsmanship of the past.

Every single ornament is either handmade, mouth-blown, hand-painted, or a combination of these, which means no two pieces are ever exactly alike. The small variations and imperfections are what make each ornament special and unique, bringing a sense of artistry and soul that mass production simply cannot replicate.

That said, recreating these pieces is often a challenge. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, a recreation doesn’t meet the standard or come close enough to the original. In such cases, we step back and move on to the next project, no matter how much time has been invested. We will never release an ornament unless we are completely confident that it faithfully captures the beauty and magic of the original.

5. Favorite Christmas tradition? Favorite Danish Christmas tradition?

On Christmas Eve, we all gather early to share some champagne and enjoy æbleskiver—known as Danish puffs in English. These delightful treats are made from a pancake-like batter but shaped into perfectly round, snowball-like spheres. Served warm, they’re soft and fluffy on the inside with a light, golden crust on the outside—an essential part of our holiday tradition.

6. Favorite Deus Living piece?

Some of our bestsellers include the 3-Meter Beaded Garland, the Wooden Champagne Bottle, and the Swan ornament. However, my personal favorite is the Tree Topper Star—an absolutely stunning piece that truly represents the zenith of Christmas. It brings everything together, adding the perfect finishing touch to any tree and capturing the magic of the season.

7. What’s next for you and Deus Living?

This year has been an incredible milestone for us. We sold more ornaments than ever before and partnered with so many new retailers around the world, allowing our collection to reach even more homes. Looking ahead, we’re excited to introduce up to 10 new additions to the collection next year. We hope even more customers will have the opportunity to hang our unique Christmas ornaments on their trees and enjoy their magic.

Beyond Christmas, we also encourage customers to use our ornaments for other celebrations. The Champagne Bottle is perfect for New Year’s festivities, the Stork and Bird make wonderful Easter decorations, and the Swaddled Baby is a beautiful way to share pregnancy news with family. With new ornaments and growing partnerships, we can’t wait to see what next year will bring!
